Release an image mask

Separate the photo and its frame into two objects again.
Release mask creates an independent image on the page. The shape or path stays in place, with its image fill removed.
Follow these steps

Select the masked object

Click the object once. Make sure you have not selected any additional objects.

Release the mask

Right-click and choose Release mask. Alternatively, use Ctrl+Cmd+M on macOS or Ctrl+Alt+M on Windows and Linux.

Check both objects

The photo is now selected independently, and the frame remains on the page. The previously hidden image areas become visible because the mask boundary is gone. Check the image position and angle.
Release mask is not the same as undoing the original masking operation. If you adjusted the photo after masking, the separate image is created from that latest placement.

Result
The photo and frame can be moved and edited independently, or combined into a mask again.
Troubleshooting
- Release mask is missing
- Check that the selected object has an image fill. A group, plain image or multiple selection does not expose this command. Unlock the object and finish any active editing operation.
