Continue or detach a table of contents

Flow a long list into multiple areas or turn it into independent text.
Continuation areas remain linked to the primary contents block. Decomposition removes that connection.
Follow these steps

Check overflow

The overflow message reports entries that do not fit. Review the area’s height and column layout. Use a continuation area instead of making the text too small.

Place remaining entries

Choose the command and position the continuation through the placement flow. It displays entries that did not fit earlier areas. Change this area’s column count in its own panel.

Entry lists, level mappings, and shared appearance are controlled by the primary block. Deleting it leaves continuation areas without their source; follow the warning to remove the area or create a new contents list.

Understand detachment

Choose Decompose to blocks when you need independent text objects and read the confirmation. Each area is decomposed on its own page. Automatic page-number updates and click-to-page navigation are lost.
