Set the reading order

Last updated: September 8, 2026 · 2 min read

Arrange content in a meaningful sequence for screen readers.

Layer order controls visual stacking; reading order controls the accessible content sequence.

Follow these steps

  1. 1

    Open reading order

    LayersReading order

Open Reading Order in the right-side Layers tab. The list shows the page’s accessible sequence. Click an item to select its block.

  2. 2

    Plan a meaningful sequence

    LayersReading order

For example, sequence a product heading, description, informative image, and action. In columns, check that reading does not jump to another column too early. Keep genuinely decorative items decorative.

  3. 3

Assign positions or return to automatic

    LayersReading orderPosition

Choose a position beside each item or select Auto to remove a manual position. Check the resulting list after edits. Manual ordering may need revision when the layout changes.

  4. 4

    Read the accessible version

    ShareAccessibilityAccessible publication link

After updating the publication, open its accessible link. Navigate headings and read the content in sequence. An attractive canvas layout does not replace this check.

Result

The sequence should make sense without relying on visual positioning.
