Create a table of contents

Last updated: September 8, 2026 · 1 min read

Build a table of contents from paragraph styles.

Entries are collected from paragraph style assignments. Enlarging text alone does not add it to the contents list.

Follow these steps

  1. 1

    Prepare heading styles

    PropertiesParagraph style

Apply suitable paragraph styles to main headings and subheadings, then insert the table-of-contents preset from Text.

  2. 2

    Map levels

    PropertiesTable of contents

Choose styles for Level 1 and Level 2. The same style cannot belong to both levels. Choose None for a level you do not need. If the list is empty, check that source text actually uses the selected styles.

  3. 3

    Edit entry labels

    PropertiesManage entries

Find an entry in the dialog, shorten its contents label, or hide it with its toggle. This does not change the source heading on its page. Clear the custom label to use the source text again; hidden entries can be reenabled.

  4. 4

    Style layout and numbering

    PropertiesTable of contents

Set 1–3 columns, column/group gaps, line height, typography, and colors. Configure page numbers, dot/line leaders, section numbers, and spread numbering. The second level has separate size, weight, and indentation controls.

  5. 5

    Check the updated list

    EditorPreview

After changing source headings or page order, review the contents. Test entry navigation in preview. If entries overflow, follow the continuation lesson.

Check your result

Check the result in preview, then verify the reader experience in the published version.

Troubleshooting

A heading is missing
Check its assigned paragraph style, whether it was hidden in Manage entries, and whether the contents area overflows.
A contents label did not follow its source
The entry may have a custom label. Clear it in Manage entries to use the source heading again.
