Replace or remove an image fill

Last updated: September 8, 2026 · 2 min read

Reuse a frame with a different photo, or remove its image fill.

Replacing the photo, resetting its placement and releasing the mask are different operations. Use the image controls here when you want to keep the frame.

Follow these steps

  1. 1

    Open the image controls

    PropertiesImage

Expand Image for a ready-made shape, or Image fill for a pen path.

  2. 2

    Choose a replacement

    PropertiesFrom file

Upload another photo with From file, or choose an available image with From gallery. The new photo replaces the existing fill in the same frame.

  3. 3

    Check the new placement

    PropertiesCrop

The new image is placed relative to the frame again. Use Crop to position the subject. If you rotated or flipped the previous photo, check the replacement’s orientation as well.

  4. 4

Reset placement or clear the fill

    PropertiesImage fill

To start framing again, use Reset frame. To remove the photo instead, select the cross beside the Image or Image fill heading. Choose the operation that fits your intention.

Reset frame resets position and scale; it does not clear every rotation or flip setting. The cross removes the fill without creating a separate photo on the page.

Controls and behavior

A reference for the controls used in this lesson.

ControlWhereWhat it does
From file / From galleryPropertiesUse a different photo in the existing frame.
Reset framePropertiesReturns position and scale to the initial placement that covers the frame.
Cross beside the image headingPropertiesRemoves only the image fill. The shape or path remains.

Result

The frame can hold a new photo or display only its own color fill. To turn the photo into an independent object, use Release mask instead.

Troubleshooting

Reset frame is missing
This control appears when relevant placement settings, such as position or scale, have changed. It is not always shown.
The removed photo did not return to the page
Clearing an image fill does not create a separate image object. Undo the removal and choose Release mask to separate the photo.
